About The Saugatuck Retro Resort

Vintage postcard of the former Shangrai-la, now known as The Saugatuck Retro Resort.

GroundsBuilt in the early 1950's as the Shangrai-La Motel, this 5-acre property has enchanted guests for nearly 60 years with its park-like setting and proximity to all the varied area attractions offered by Saugatuck/Douglas and Holland, Michigan.

Being constructed in the 50's meant attention to details such as irregular firedglazed brick with sandstone sashes, deep eaves affording protection from the elements and deep sidewalks for "in front of room" lounging and mingling with other guests.

SignAs you approach the property, one of its strongest attributes is its original sign, noted on many historic neon websites. With its large, blue porcelain background, it's rare original red neon tubes loudly and proudly proclaim, "MOTEL"—even flashing at times. Having just undergone a complete forensic renovation and cleaning of all her components, her vintage neon appeal rivals her younger self—she looks great for almost 60!

As you pull into the deep u-shaped drive through flanking brick columns, you immediately feel you have arrived to a special destination like so many before you. It's time to unwind! Driving further up the drive to the front office, you will note the spacious grounds speckled with large trees and landscaped beds littered with Adirondack chairs for lounging, napping, reading, conversations, libations or all the above! As well, the center courtyard features a fire pit and original charcoal grill—put on the madras shorts and wayfarers and slip back into time when grilling was grilling!

PoolFurther up the drive, the property's pool comes into view. Added as an amenity in 1967, its kidney shape lends to ample deck space for sunbathing or sitting tableside and boasts a depth of 10 feet. Open from 10 AM EST to dusk, Memorial Day through mid to late September (weather permitting), the blue waters beckon you to play hooky from all the shopping and dining found in town to simply chill poolside.
